Katie has been that motivational factor that took my triathlon experiences from a good to great. I've enjoyed triathlons for 10+ years but until this past year when I had the chance to work with Katie and her committed team on a weekly basis my triathlon and endurance experiences went to a whole new level. More specifically my break through was training with Katie in preparation for the Escape from Alcatraz tri. Without Katie's expertise I would have struggled to survive the swim. With Katie's help I placed in the top 10% overall. Katie has taught me many things but most importantly how to get the most out of my self.
Jeff had a great season in 2008 placing in his AG in all SC races, running a smoking fast half in 1:29; finishing the Escape from Alcatraz 14th out of 251 in his AG but even more impressive was the fact that he was 95th overall out of 1600 athletes. He finished the year by qualifying for Boston with a 3:12 marathon in Kiawah.

I am a walking testimonial for your services. Three years ago I did my first tri on a bet and could not swim a lap without stopping and had to walk part of the 5k. Last year I had numerous top 10 overall finishes and masters and age group podium spots, even finishing second in the overall year end results in the 40-44 age group for the South Carolina series. Since I started I have finished two half ironman races, a marathon, and just completed IM Lake Placid. Through it all you have kept me focused on my goals and made me better by a strict schedule and a manner in which you can be encouraging and motivating by never letting me be satisfied unless I give my best. I can tell your plans are individualized and not a cookie cutter variety. You are very accessible whenever a question arises. The one thing I have most admired is that when I needed a push or you felt I could do better you were not afraid to let me know. I could not imagine this journey without your support and guidance.

Katie has been my coach for 3 years. In October of 2006 I entered by first Ironman distance race, The Great Floridian. I would love to say that I finished in the top 10% of my age group – or that I finished at all. Unfortunately, the record setting triple digit heat left me exhausted and dehydrated after the bike.I was able to complete 19 miles of the run on fitness alone, with a totally empty gas tank, but then passed out in front of my wife and three kids and woke up in the medical tent. Why would I include this in a testimonial to what a great coach Katie is? I knew I wanted to try again, but my family was not so sure. Training at this level is very definitely a family commitment for us. Katie was able to coach me back to strength both physically and mentally while continually reassuring my wife. Because I work rotating shifts and my schedule is unpredictable Katie must create a schedule for me that is flexible yet consistent. My nutrition plan took a lot of tinkering and she hammered it into my pea brain.I just successfully finished Ironman Lake Placid 2008 and had a great race! Katie is a wonderful coach. She is knowledgeable, always encouraging and upbeat, even pushy when she has to be. But most importantly, my wife likes her and when you expend this much time and energy with the help of another woman, your wife better like her a lot.
David has a great sense of humor about everything and has in general been very fun to work with. He wanted all of you to see what he looked like before he really focused on his training.... (circa 1971)

- What impression does Katie’s coaching leave on you?
Katie exemplifies true sportsmanship and the quintessential coach. Katie wants the very best for you over her own performance as seen when we’re out there racing together — when I can barely utter a word out on the race course, Katie is shouting words of motivation and encouragement to push me forward. She takes care of her athletes first & foremost before thinking about her own race that day. She looks for each of us before and after the race to see if we need anything and to check on how we performed and are feeling. Of course each of us can’t wait to find her to report our race! — we believe it’s as much of a victory for her as a coach as it is for us individually as athletes.
- What is the one element she drives into you which you hear over and over? What is most important for her that you remember?
Always Form & Focus. It instantly brings my training to mind and gives me something to think about over the in-race discomfort I’m feeling! She also repeatedly says in both training and racing, to “stay tough!” and reminds us, “you have it in you; you can do it!” — whatever it is we are working to achieve.
- When you are out there in the race, what do you think about in relation to her coaching?
My training. That is where I do all my hard work. Racing is the reward for this, the fun part of the sport where I get to put it all together. If you train as prescribed, then race day it is as simple as 1 – 2 – 3.
- If you have any other thoughts you would like to share regarding your experience being coached by Katie? Katie is a Champion on all fronts: as a friend, an athlete, and a coach
